Darrell Scott

Studio Concert Series: Darrell Scott

Have mercy, what a show!  Thank you Darrell and all our wonderful Blue Rock tech and volunteers.  Photos and highlights coming soon.

Powerful writing, passionate vocals, masterful picking.  Entertainment Weekly
Twice named Nashville’s Songwriter of the Year, Grammy nominated for both songwriting and performance, Blue Rock welcomes the man Performing Songwriter Magazine dubbed “the best of the best.”
Born on a tobacco farm in Kentucky, Darrell was part of a musical family.  His father, a steelworker and songwriter, made the move to Southern California with the family when Darrell was 11.  Darrell and his four brothers soon began playing in his father’s band and he carried that on-the-job training into a career of his own.  Along the way, Darrell earned a degree in poetry from Tufts University before making the move to Nashville.
Darrell Scott has written songs recorded by Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, Kathy Mattea, Suzy Bogguss and Guy Clark. “Long Time Gone” was not only a hit for The Dixie Chicks, but garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Country Song.  He co-wrote and performed (with Tim O’Brien) “The Second Mouse” which was nominated for Best Country Instrumental Performance.  He is also a noted producer including two projects for legendary performer, Guy Clark.
In 2003, Darrell launched his own label, Full Light Records.  For the past two years, he has been “Artist in Residence” with Orchestra Nashville.  His most recent solo effort, “Modern Hymns” pays soulful homage to some of his songwriting heroes—from Joni Mitchell to Bob Dylan to Paul Simon.
Help us give Darrell a warm, Texas Hill Country welcome.

Another month, another trip to “Planet Blue Rock…” that small, but sublime, point in the universe where songwriters materialize and new stars are formed.  A journey to Blue Rock always leaves me with the vague sense that perhaps I’ve been living on a different planet… as that seems the only logical explanation for having previously overlooked the enormous talent of Blue Rock’s artists.  This month’s visit by Darrell Scott was no exception.

I hadn’t heard of Mr. Scott before his performance was posted, but have learned by now to confidently place my artistic faith in the sure hands of Blue Rock’s always gracious hosts, Billy and Dodee Crockett.  As always, their welcoming hospitality was incomparable.

As Darrell Scott’s genius emerged, you could feel the Blue Rock celebrants settling into that comfortable and transfixed state one achieves in the presence of artistic mastery.  Mr. Scott’s brilliance on guitar and keyboard were only rivaled by his limitless vocal stylings as he flawlessly performed his own beautifully crafted songs along with several well-worn covers.  His rendition of Paul Simon’s “American Tune” was beautiful beyond words, and his jovial, on-stage story-telling and generous time spent afterwards with autograph seekers endeared him to everyone.  Where else on Earth can one share casual conversation and chocolate chip cookies with one of America’s greatest songwriters???

So, another perfect evening at Planet Blue Rock.  If you’ve not yet made the journey, you should…  It’s just up the road… but light years from anything else.
