John Gorka

Studio Concert Series: John Gorka

Folk legend John Gorka brought his humor, stories, and his incredibly well-crafted songs to the Blue Rock stage.

The name John Gorka is pretty much synonymous with contemporary folk music.  He burst onto the scene when he won the prestigious New Folk Award at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1984.  When John Gorka released his first album I Know in 1987, Rolling Stone magazine dubbed him “the voice of ‘new folk’.”  He’s toured all over the world with the likes of Nanci Griffith, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Shawn Colvin just to name a few.  Bottom line is…John Gorka is a powerhouse.

John started out playing at The Godfrey Daniels coffee shop, a venerable folk hot spot in Pennsylvania.  Though his academic studies were focused on philosophy and history, music grabbed hold of him and refused to let go.  He played all over the Northeast, and eventually joined up with Jack Hardy’s legendary Fast Folk circle in New York City, which put him in the company of folks like Lyle Lovett and Shawn Colvin.  Record contracts with High Street Records, and now Red House Records soon followed.

With eleven critically acclaimed albums under his belt, Gorka remains at the top of his genre.  “He’s still very much in the business of writing songs that matter,” says Roberta Schwartz of FAME magazine.  John recently has been touring with artist friends Eliza Gilkyson and Cliff Eberhardt.  Come join us for an evening with John Gorka at Blue Rock Studio.
