Ruthie Foster
Studio Concert Series: Ruthie Foster
Thursday, October 9, 2008

She makes a sound from down around the center of everything. What an evening with Ruthie. Shaking the rocks. Enjoy these photos from Rodney Bursiel and Nathan Brown.
Ruthie Foster has been making quite a name for herself since she entered the singer/songwriter scene in 1997, with her self-produced debut Full Circle, and furthermore with her 2002 breakthrough release Runaway Soul (produced by Austin’s Lloyd Maines). Though Ruthie is a proud native of Texas, she’s spent her share of time touring the world with the U.S. Navy band, Pride, and found herself living in New York City for a few years under a songwriting contract with Atlantic Records. It is in her latest album, however, that Ruthie has captured her music with its truest intentions.
The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster (recorded in Austin with producer Papa Mali), finds Ruthie diving back into her soul and R & B background. Traces of her early work can be heard in songs like “Beaver Creek Blues” and the gospel revival, “Mama Said.” Together with Papa Mali, Ruthie was able to deliver the soul record she was destined to make. “Early on, long before I ever got into the folk thing, I was doing more soul on acoustic guitar than anything else. And that’s always been a part of the sound that I have,” she says. Mali’s vision was integral in creating the vibe of the record, selecting musicians and instrumentations that evoke the spirit of Ruthie’s songs. “I’ve had a lot of changes in my life the last couple of years here, both personally and musically, and it was just time to step out. This record’s all about what I’ve been through these last couple of years here, and then some.”
Thanks to Ruthie Foster, all of our amazing volunteers, and guests for an amazing evening in the Texas hills!

WOW——I mean WOOOOOOWWWWWW. I had been wanting to see Ruthie for some time, and then to get to see her special brand of gospel and blues to Blue Rock. This was an experience that I will long remember!
Thanks Billy and Dodee. This was one for the archives!
Steve & Laura Fenech says:
Ruthie had an honesty and energy that quickly had our soul’s singing. Laura and I walked away with a new passion for each other, music, Blue Rock…and the beautiful Ruthie Foster.
Patricia Lumme says:
RUTHIE !! That voice!!! To hear her in person at Blue Rock.. ‘WOW’ she does not need a band or an instrument to back her up. I have heard her on record but never in person. Phenomenal Women fits her perfectly. She is an entertainer, and it was a pleasure to see and hear her perform. ” BLUE ROCK ” Well that’s just “A LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN IN OUR OWN BACK YARD”!! Thanks again ~ Billy and Dodee for sharing this experience. I look forward to my next visit. Patricia
Jim Ansley says:
The best concert I’ve seen in years! The venue was eclipsed only by the artist (as it should be). Thanks Billy and Dodee, for your kind hospitality.
Deb & Skip Dewley says:
Yea, it couldn’t get any better than Ruthie. She is such a musical force, such an explosion of awakenings on every level. She is an experience that takes the room over. We’ve seen her twice in Ann Arbor, and all of her shows on the 2008 Legendary R & B Criuse. We can’t get enough of her! Deb & Skip
Deb Gray says:

doug smith says:
I volunteer as a programmer and music director at our small community radio station, WVLS here in monterey, va As a result i am exposed to a lot of contemporary music, much of which ranges from forgettable to really bad. I recently discovered and purchased some of Ruthie’s albums for my personal library. She has done a lot to restore my faith in music’s future. Aside from that great voice, her song selection allows me to play her on many different show formats. Great musicians backing her too. I could easily fill pages of plaudits for this talent.
TV and Carolyn Rao says:
We saw Ruthie at Dakota Bar and Grill in Minneapolis a couple of years ago and hoplessly fell in love with her style of music. We are rooting for her Grammy and much much more!
