Sam Baker and Walt Wilkins
Studio Concert Series: Sam Baker and Walt Wilkins
Thursday, February 14, 2008
The show was a Texas Valentine to anybody who loves great songs and generous spirits. Sam and Walt (and Tina too) played and sang and laughed us all the way through an unforgettable evening.
It’s hard to say why Sam Baker’s songs wield such power. They’re bare bones, stripped of every unnecessary notion...leaving the listener with hardly a defense against what we’ll just call the plain truth. His music renders the earthy and the exquisite, the mundane and the mysterious, in rare light as few artists can.
In 1986, while riding a train through Peru, a terrorist bomb exploded in his car killing those around him and leaving him deafened, injured, and clinging to life. Fast forward twenty years and we find a contemporary treasure, a storytelling songwriting soul, convinced of the value of a day. Sam’s critically celebrated 2004 debut release, Mercy, was followed by the release of Pretty World in 2007, both co-produced by friend and fellow Texan songwriter Walt Wilkins. He will be joining us after a concert tour of the Netherlands and the UK. See the recent Austin Chronicle feature on Sam at: http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid:561471.
A veteran songwriter and producer, Walt Wilkins is a Texas troubadour in the tradition of Guy Clark and Kris Kristof-ferson. After writing the hit “Songs About Texas” for Pat Green, as well as songs for Ricky Skaggs, Pam Tillis, and Ty Herndon, Walt is riding the wave of a new album, Diamonds in the Sun, with his band, The Mystiqueros, and legendary producer Lloyd Maines. After ten years in Nashville, he is back in Austin to the delight of his ever-increasing audience. Walt and Sam have a fun, loose, and irreverent approach to concerts together and love to share the stage whenever possible.
A true highlight of the series. Enjoy these photos by Nathan Brown and Rodney Bursiel.
